[Classes 103 (iv) and 108 (i).] A floor, wall or wall covering, particularly for a vehicle, is built up from a metal sheet 2 formed with a number of parallel channels of dovetail or other key section and one or more sheets of a non-metallic resilient and deformable material, such as compressed granulated cork, having ribs that are forced into and engage with the undercut metal channels. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, the deformable sheets 1, which are initially provided with a series of parallel rectangular ribs 3, Fig. 3, of a width slightly greater than that of the channel mouths, are applied to both sides of the metal layer, the ribs being initially compressed in forcing them into the channels and then being allowed to expand. If the cork layer is disposed on one side only of the metal sheet it may serve, when secured on the upper side, as a tread surface or, when secured to the under side, as an insulator for sound and vibrations, e.g. in a railway vehicle. A suitable binding- agent may be incorporated with the cork granules, or rubber sheets may be substituted for the cork, while the layers may be cemented together by the use of a bituminous or oxychloride cement or rubber solution. For railway vehicles the metal sheet may conveniently be made of steel, while for motor vehicles aluminium may be employed.
