Abstract

370,280. Controlling motor vehicles. COLELL, R., 7, Richard Wagner Strasse, Karlsruhe, Germany. July 13, 1931, No. 20066. Convention date, Oct. 1, 1930. [Class 79 (v).] The fuel supply to the internal-combustion engine is automatically interrupted whenever the throttle is closed and the engine is driven by the vehicle, the control members for the throttle, clutch and change-speed gears being so connected to the means for stopping the fuel supply that even when the throttle is closed the fuel is again supplied to the engine if the clutch is disengaged or the gears put in neutral position. In the construction shown in Fig. 1 the accelerator pedal 2 is drawn by its spring 5 into the " idling " position in which the throttle 3 is closed, the pedal lever having an arm 6 bearing on a slidable stop 7 shown in a raised position. When the stop is lowered the arm 6 and pedal 2 move beyond the throttle-closing position and a projection 9 on the throttle rod'4 closes a valve 10 which may control either the supply of fuel to the carburetter jets or the slow-running mixture. The stop 7 is lowered by a spring 27 and is raised, to ensure the supply of fuel to the engine, either by an arm 8 which rises to the position shown when the gears are in " neutral or by an arm 16 which rises when the clutch is disengaged. In the construction shown in Fig. 3 three valves 251, 261, 271 are respectively controlled by the accelerator pedal, the clutch pedal and the gear lever ; when these valves are all open atmospheric air is admitted at 30 and passes through the valves in series to a pipe 34 leading to the slow-running jet so as to destroy the suction effect there and stop the supply of fuel. The three valves are open only when the throttle is closed, the clutch engaged, and one or other of the gears engaged as soon as any valve is closed the slow-running jet works normally. In a modification the clutch and gear controls act on a single valve.
