Abstract

368,945. Friction clutches. MAGNET-WERK GES. EISENACH SPEZIALFABRIK FUR ELEKTROMAGNET-APPARATE, Eisenach, Germany. Feb. 13, 1931, No. 4611. Convention date, Feb. 15, 1930. [Class 80 (ii).] Operating clutches.-Overheating of friction clutches by prolonged slip is prevented by temperatureresponsive means acting to disengage them. The device may be incorporated in the vicinity of the friction surfaces 6, 8 of an electromagnetic clutch 3, 4 and be adapted to close a relay circuit acting to break the circuit of the winding 2. The temperature-responsive means may comprise a vessel 10 with a copper or other heat-conducting metal wall flush with the friction surface 8. Expansion of the air in the vessel brings a small contact-plate 12 on the diaphragm 11 into contact with an adjustable screw 13 to close the relay circuit (not shown). The sensitiveness can be increased by the use in the vessel 10 of small quantities of carbon bisulphide, sulphuric-ester, or like low-boiling- point liquid, whereby the clutch can be disengaged at temperatures below 50‹ C., particularly if the clutch is used in the neighbourhood of inflammable substances. Alternatively, the relay current may be directly produced by a thermocouple. The device may be situated at any point where the frictional heat can reach it sufficiently rapidly. The relay may be omitted, the clutch energizing-circuit being either broken or short-circuited by a spring- contact normally held by easily-fusible solder of selected melting-point. Electrical tripping of the disengaging means may be replaced by mechanical tripping, and the device can be applied to clutches other then electromagnetic.
