Abstract

368,337. Wireless transmitting apparatus. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd., Marconi House, Strand, London, and GREEN, E., Penrose, Long Stomps, Chelmsford. Dec. 2, 1930, No. 36322. [Class 40 (v).] A radio or like transmitter is rendered active and inactive under the control of speech or other signals by means of a rectifier containing a resistance-capacity combination in its output circuit, the voltage across which controls an absorber valve serving to divert anode feed current from one or more of the high-frequency amplifiers. Speech or other signals are applied to the grids of valves V1, V2, and the amplified signal current passes on the one hand to the modulator via the transformer T1, and on the other hand through a potentiometer R1, R2 and transformer T2 to a pair of choke-capacity coupled amplifiers V3, V4. The output from the valve V4 is rectified by a valve V5 and charges a resistance-shunted capacity C4. The presence of signals causes the upper plate of the condenser C4 to acquire a negative charge, and raises the internal resistance of the subsequent valves V6, V7, and owing to the external plate resistance R5, the plate voltage rises. The rise in voltage is communicated through a battery B2 to the grids of further valves V8, V9 which then pass plate current from a high-voltage source HT2 through resistance R6. Their plates become less positive, and a fraction of this voltage fall (determined by the resistances R7, R8 and battery B3) is applied to the grid of the final valve V10 cutting off the plate current through this valve. A resistance R9 in the plate circuit is also in the plate supply circuit DL of the radio transmitter, which is thus brought into action when signals are present, and is inoperative when signals are absent. The suppression of the carrier during non-signalling periods eliminates singing round the circuit and prevents undue interference with adjacent receiving apparatus, particularly in ship installations.
