Abstract
367,767. Damping vibrations of overhead cables. SIEMENS-SCHUCKERTWERKE AKT.-GES., Siemensstadt, Berlin. Sept. 19, 1930, No. 28069. Convention date, June 7. [Class 36.] In order that vibration dampers suspended from an overhead line may exert their influence over a wide frequency range, the internal friction oi the dampers is so chosen that the ratio <alpha>/# # lies between 0À1 and 10, where alpha represents the damping exponent of the dampers and f the mean frequency of the line oscillations. The damping exponent alpha may be determined from a formula connecting the logarithmic decrement and the natural frequency of vibration of the dampers. The dampers may consist of dashpots provided with adjustable valves for controlling the friction between the moving parts, or may be formed by a bundle of weighted leaf springs secured together by adjustable clamps. The internal friction of the damper shown in Fig. 2, comprising a ring 4 supported by springs 3 from a collar 2 attached to the line 1, may be increased by braking devices such as tubes on the collar 2 rubbing on studs carried by the ring 4, or by discs secured to the ends of the collar 2 which frictionally engage the ring 4.
