Abstract
Vinyl compounds are polymerized by treatment with a polymerization catalyst in the presence of a liquid medium which is a solvent for the initial material but not for the polymer produced. The method may be applied to batch processes or to continuous flow processes, and facilitates the separation of the polymer from the solvent. Examples describe the polymerization of: (1) vinyl acetate using high boiling gasoline as solvent and benzoyl peroxide as catalyst; (2) vinyl chloracetate using ozonized methyl alcohol; (3) a mixture of vinyl acetate and chloracetate using high boiling gasoline and benzoyl peroxide; (4) styrene using ozonized methyl alcohol; (5) vinyl formate using ethyl acetate and benzoyl peroxide; (6) vinyl acetate using dibutyl ether and benzoyl peroxide; (7) vinyl chloracetate using toluene and benzoyl peroxide. Vinyl chloride is also mentioned as starting material.
