Abstract
366,860. Type-bar-making machines. HART, H., 9, Kingsway, London.-(Mergenthaler Linotype Co.; 29, Ryerson Street, Brooklyn, New York, U.S.A.) June 29, 1931, No. 18724. [Class 100 (iii).] Assembling matrices.-In machines adapted for' handling matrix founts which differ as to the size and number of their characters, such as the ordinary ninety-character founts and the special seventy-two or fifty-five character founts used for head-letter or display matter, the assembler entrance or raceway is provided with fixed guide-plates, which are so arranged as to be capable of handling both kinds of founts. The number of guide-plates is reduced by about one-half, and their upper ends are so located as to accord with those grooves of the two magazines that occupy approximately the same vertical planes. A short distance below its upper end, each guide-plate B<6>, Fig. 2, is forked into two branches, which reduce the width of the channels, so as to give side support to the descending matrices. The guide-plates terminate short of the magazine at their upper ends, to ensure the bodies of the matrices, and especially those of back-milled matrices, clearing the plates, and they are continued by ribmembers B<7>, which engage the matrices by their ears only, and are low enough to be out of the path of the bodies. The rib-members are of arrow-head form, to deflect the matrices to either side. As the channels between the guide-plates at their upper ends are, in some cases, wider than the matrices, the bridgemember B<3>, Fig. 4, of the entrance is formed in a gradual curve, so as to help to maintain the matrices in equilibrium until they reach the narrower parts of the channels.
