No. 23271. fClass 100 (iii).] Magazines ; escapements.-Means are provided for enabling either magazines provided with escapements or magazines unprovided with escapements to be used alternatively in the same machine, so that the magazines of machines of the kind known under the Registered Trade Mark " Intertype " can be used on machines of the kind known under the Registered Trade Mark " Linotype," and vice versa. (1) Sets of escapements D<1>, Fig. 2, are mounted in supporting bars E, which are hinged one to each magazine base-frame A, so that the escapements may either rest in operative position in the case of a magazine D, which is unprovided with escapements, or may be swung through an angle of 180‹ into an inoperative position in the case of a magazine C, which is provided with escapements C<1>. The escapement-actuating elements, which are mounted on fixed bars F, comprise series of vertically movable pawls H, pivoted to the free ends of levers H<1>, which can be rocked by push-rods H<5>. The pawls H are adapted to engage either the escapements D<1> carried by the hinged bars E, or the escapements C<1> mounted on the magazines C. (2) Each base-frame is provided with pivoted latches N, Fig. 1, which are engaged by one of the usual transverse bars K on the underside of a magazine C, to prevent the magazine from sliding forwards, these bars K being differently located from the corresponding bars J on the magazines D. The bars J of the magazines D depress the latches N and rest against the usual shoulders L. (3) As the longitudinal guide-bar on the underside of a magazine C is narrower than the corresponding bar on a magazine D, the groove L<1>, Fig. 9, in the base-frame, that accommodates the bars, is provided on either side with pivoted lugs O, which, when turned into operative position, reduce the width of the groove. (4) As the channels of the magazines C, D differ in spacing and inclination, the machine is provided with interchangeable magazine-entrances, such as those described in Specification 302,879, and a grooved guidemember P, Fig. 2, is located between the magazines and the assembler-entrance B, the grooves being arranged at inclinations intermediate between those of corresponding channels of the different magazines, and being preferably flared at their upper ends.
