Abstract

719,448. Type-bar making machines. MERGENTHALER LINOTYPE CO. Sept. 4, 1951 [Sept. 7, 1950], No. 28792/53. Divided out of 719,388. Class 100 (3). Escapements.-In a typographic composing machine wherein circulating matrices are released from a magazine in the order in which their characters are to appear in print and incorporating the combination of a keyboard mechanism, a plurality of matrix releasing devices, and an assembly of laterally bent reeds arranged side by side and connecting the keyboard mechanism with the matrix-releasing devices, the laterally bent portions of every other reed are offset in a forward or rearward direction so as to prevent interference between adjacent reeds when the reeds are raised. As shown, there are provided two sets of reeds D3, D4 for actuating the matrix-releasing devices, slidably supported in an adjustable frame J through slots in lower plates J<SP>1</SP>, J2 and slots in upper plates J<SP>3</SP>, J<SP>4</SP>. As the width of the discharge end of the magazine is greater than the width of the keyboard the reeds are bent laterally and the bent or diagonal portions of every other reed D<SP>31</SP> of the group D<SP>3</SP> is offset in a forward edgewise direction so that its rear edge d will stand clear of the forward edge d<SP>1</SP> of the adjacent reed to the right. Similarly the bent over portion of every other reed D<SP>41</SP> of the group D<SP>4</SP> is offset in a rearward edgewise direction so that its forward edge d<SP>2</SP> will stand clear of the rear edge d<SP>3</SP> of the adjacent read to the right. The vertical end portions of all the reeds are, however, in alignment. The remainder of the machine is as described in Specification 719,388.
