Abstract

167,651. Hart, H., (Mergenthaler Linotype Co.). June 22, 1920. Keyboards a n d magazines for typebar - making machines. Means are provided for enabling the machine to handle matrices having characters of greatly increased size suitable for headlines, advertising and display work &c. An ordinary magazine is used but the order of the matrices is changed so as to store them in the channels best adapted as to size and location to contain them, some matrices occupying two or more channels. The keyboard is also re-arranged so that the keys occupy a different order from that of the matrix columns, some of the keys being displaced laterally or offset with regard to their matrix columns. The escapement-reeds A<2> are actuated as heretofore by cam-yokes A<3> which are released by triggers A<7> operated by vertical slides F<2>. The slides F<2> corresponding to escapements which are in the same plane as the keys are connected directly to their key-levers F'. key-levers which are not in the plane of their escapements operate idle slides F<3> which are connected to their camreleasing slides F<2> by U-shaped connecting- plates F<5>,' or, where the slides F<2>, F<3> are adjacent, by rivets F<4>.
