Be it lrnown that I, HEINRICH Dnonnnn, manager, residing at Berlin, in the Kingdom of Prussia, Germany, have invented certain new and useful improvements in lilatrix-Setting and Line-Casting hiiachines,
- of which the hillowing is a specification.
This invention relates to a matrix setting and type line casting machine in whichthe matrices are provided on both opposite longitudinal edges with printing characters. Unlike in the former machines in which such matrices are used, all the devices for turning the matrices on their way down from the magazine, and again when falling into the magazine, are rendered unnecessary according to this invention, and in their place is used an adjustable magazine which can be turned about an axis of rotation in such manner that the lower portion comes to the top. At the same time there are provided separate devices which, in spite of the rotation of the magazine, enable the correct matrices to be released, and the matrices to be distributed, in the proper compartments, in spite of the distributing device itself being fixed.
A. construction according to this invention applied to a Mergenthaler line setting and casting machine is'illust-rated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure -1 is a front elevation of the maga' zine together with the matrix conveying device, Fig. 2. is a diagrammatic side elevation of the magazine with the releasing de' vice, Fig. 3 shows the releasing device on an enlarged scale, Fig. 4 is the distributing bar on an enlarged scale, Fig. 5 shows a matrix and the cross-section of the distributing bar for one-half, and Fig. 6 a matrix with the cross-section of the distributing bar for the second half, of the magazine.
- The general arrangement of. the keyboard,-of the magazine, and of the distributing device, is as usual, only the magazine is arranged according to this invention so that it can rotate about a longitudinal axis. To that end, a short space in the center can be left for instance free from-the matrices and at that point there can be arranged a bush OI'ySlBGVQ 1 by means of which the magazine is mounted on a bearing pin 9.. so that one or the other of the walls can be alternately brought upward. For fixing in the two positions can be used any desired fixing device not shown in the drawing. As shown in Fig. 3, the magazine glS provided with two sets of releasing devices 4 and 5 which are alternately operated. Each set wiearrying the releasers will be advanced toward the magazine or away from the same. According to the position of the slide 7,
either one releasing device, the lower one or the other one, the upper one, will be accordingly brought into an engagement with the matricgs in the magazine. For moving the slide 7 1s used a crank arranged laterally of the magazine and preferably operated from both sides. The crank is always adjusted in such manner that the releasing devices arranged at the bottom, are in engagement with the matrices. take place in the usual manner by means of the releasing device 10 operated by the keyboard. As the matrices, as shown in Figs. 5 and G, are provided with printing charactors on both lateral edges the characters arranged on one side will be brought into the casting position when the magazine is in one position. If, however, themagazine is rotated about the pin 2, and the releasing devices at the same time reversed, the reverse character will be used. It is obvious that during one portion of the reversing movement, both locking devices will be in engagement so as to prevent any matrices from falling out from the magazine.
As on the magazine being" reversed, the key-board releasing devices on the left hand side would come into engagement with the magazine conduits which were at first on the righthand side, the released matrices would not after .the turning of the case be the same as the characters strucln if all the ,tour letters on. the matrices were exactly The setting can then identical. For that reason, the arrangement of the printing characters is made in such manner that the whole of the matrices is divided into two parts, one of which is on the right hand side, and the other on the left hand side, of the center of rotation. As regards the thickness, the outer left hand and the outermost right hand matrices are identical with each other, the second and the penultimate also identical and so on. The matrices of the first magazine channel have on the rear side the same character as the matrices of the last magazine channel onthe front side, and vice-versa. \Vhen for instance the first letter on the keyboard at one side thereof is -an a, and the last letter a z, the matrices of the first magazine channel would have on the front side an a and on' the rear side a z, and the matrices of the last magazine channel ,on the front side a z, and on the rear side an a. If the magazine is rotated so that the last conduit or channel becomes the first, the result will be that when the keya is struck, an a would be released, although now other matrices are at this place. However, the characters arranged on the front side of the first channels matrices correspond to the type characters arranged on the back side of the last channels matrices and vice-versa only as regards the character itself but the two characters a or z may be relatively of a difi'erent font or face.
. For distributing the matrices in their proper conduits, it is also necessary to provide a separate device, as the matrices falling into the first conduit in one position of the magazine, must fall in the other position of the magazine, into the last conduit, and convjersely. For that reason, the distributing bar 11, as shown in'Figs. 46, is also divided into two parts. One half contains on the side facing the compositor, the well known tooth combinations 15, while on the rear side 16 the sustaining teeth holding the matrices are cut away so that this side has the shape of steps (see the section in Fig. 5). The other half contains, on the side away from the compositor, the tooth combinations 17 (Fig. 6) while on the front side 18 the teeth are cut away. The tooth combinations are arranged in such manner that the first tooth combination of the first half corresponds to the last combination of the second half, the second one to the last but one, and so on. The matrices contain also tooth combinations 19 and 20 only on one side, while on the other 'side there are complete teeth 21 and 22, and the sides :in the matrices belonging to the different halves of the magazine alternate. When a matrix belonging to the first half of the magazine, is placed on the distributing bar, the side provided with full teeth 21, will be on that side 16 of the distributing bar, on which the teeth are cut away, and the tooth combinations 15 and ,19 will come into engagement with each other. The matrix will then fall in the well known manner into the proper position in the magazine. Ifyhowever, the magazine had been reversed, that is to say the matrix comes in the reversed position on the distributing bar, then the full tooth side 21 will engage with the combinations 15, and the combination side 19 with the side 16 without teeth. For that reason, the matrix will not be able to fall off at any point of; the first part of the bar, on the contrary, it will pass over the central portion 23 which may be preferably provided on both sides with full teeth, on to the second half of the distributing bar. At the latter point, its tooth combinations 19 come into contact with the side of the bar which itself is provided with tooth combinations 17 and the 35 full tooth side 21 with the side 18 of the bar the teeth of which are cut away. Since,
as already stated, the two halves starting from the center to the sides, have the same combinations, the matrix which before fell off on the first half of the bar, on the magazine and consequently the matrix itself being turned, will fall off on the second half of the bar, namely at the point where at that moment is situated the conduit to which it. 5 belongs. A similar but reversed mode of operation will obtain in connection with the matrices belonging-to the second'half of the magazine, and need-not be specifically described herein. 7 b
Figs. 5 and 6 show cross-sections through the two halves of the bar 11, and at the same time the corresponding matrices. In order to prevent, in case of a one-sided supporting of the matrices, a turning to the side, the bar 11 could be preferably provided with a projection 12 extending through the whole length and coming into contact with a notch 13 on the matrices.
The matrices themselves can be either provided as shown in the drawing, on each side with two characters 14 of the same or different type, but of course a single character, or more than two characters, could be used on each side, according as the machine is 5 provided with catching devices for one, two or more types.
Having now particularly described the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, I de- 2 clare that what I claim is 1. In a matrix setting and type line casting machine in combination matrices provided on both sides with characters and having distributing teeth, a magazine containing the matrices and having means to enable the magazine to be turned through an angle 0f'180 about its central longitudinal axis and a toothed distributing bar, said matrices being subdivided into two groups, each of which is provided on one side with full distributing teeth and on the other 'side with tooth combinations, the said combinations being arranged on the front side of the one group and on the rear side of the other group.

In a matrix setting and typeline casting machine in combination matrices provided on both sides with pharacters and having distributing teeth, a magazine containing the matrices and having means to enable the magazine to be turned through an angle of 180 about its central longitudinal axis and a toothed/distributing bar, said matrices being subdivided into two groups, each of which is provided on one side with full distributing teeth and on the other side with tooth combinations, the said combinations being arranged on the front side of the one group an 0 group, the first matrix of the one group havtooth combination corresponding to the combination of the last matrix of the second group,.the second matrix of the first while on the n the rear side of the other group having a tooth combination corresponding to the combination of the last but one matrix of the second group, and so on.

In a matrix setting and type line casting machine in combination matrices pro titled on both sides with characters and having distributing teeth, a magazine'containing the matrices and having means to enable the magazine to be turned through an angle of 180 about its central longitudinal axis a and a toothed distributing bar, the matrices being subdivided into two groups and the distributing bar intotwo parts, each group and each part having only on one side the known tooth combinations and on the other side one of the said elements being provided With full distributing teeth and the other element with the holding teeth cut away, thesaid distributing bar also being provided with a guide rib and the said mat rices with a corresponding notch engaging with the guide rib.

In a typographical machine, a-channeled magazine for the type or matrices, the said magazine being shiftable into a plural? ity of operative'positions, and each channel being provided with a corresponding plurality of escapement devices, so that type 0.- matrices may be delivered therefrom in all of said positions.

A series or set of matrices, each having in its opposite edgesdififerent characters arbitrarily selected with relation to each other so that the series may be arranged with the characters on one edge, in a certain consecutive order and the characters on the opposite edge in the same consecution.

A series: of matrices, each provided with a V-shaped notch containing a distributing tooth-combination, the matrices of one grouphaving their tooth-combinations formed wholly on one side of the V-shaped notches and those of the other group having their tooth-combinations formed wholly on the opposite side of said notch.
