Escapements.-In a typographical composing machine wherein circulating matrices are released from a magazine in the order in which their characters are to appear in print, the composed line transferred to the face of a mould, the mould filled with molten metal to form a type-bar against the matrices which produce the type characters thereon, and the matrices thereafter returned through distributing mechanism to the magazine from which they started, there are provided two magazines A<SP>1</SP>, A<SP>2</SP>, two sets of matrix-releasing reeds D<SP>3</SP>, D<SP>4</SP>, one set for each magazine, a keyboard mechanism E and mechanism for swinging the appropriate set of reeds into operative relation to the keyboard mechanism. As shown, the apparatus comprises four magazines A<SP>1</SP>, A<SP>2</SP>, A<SP>3</SP>, A<SP>4</SP>, magazines A<SP>1</SP> and A<SP>3</SP> containing seventytwo character display fonts and magazines A<SP>2</SP> and A<SP>4</SP> containing ordinary ninety character display fonts. As assembler entrance C includes an upper throat section C<SP>1</SP> to co-operate with magazine A<SP>1</SP> or A<SP>3</SP> and a member C3 to co-operate with magazines A<SP>2</SP> or A<SP>4</SP>. An adjustable throat section C<SP>2</SP> to co-operate with either the throat section C<SP>1</SP> or member C<SP>3</SP> is also provided. The throat section C<SP>2</SP> is operated by a lever F through linkage F<SP>1</SP>, F<SP>2</SP>, F<SP>4</SP>, F<SP>3</SP> and rod F<SP>6</SP> attached by a pivot pin F<SP>7</SP> to a crank arm C<SP>5</SP> on a shaft C<SP>4</SP> to which is fastened the throat section C<SP>2</SP>. A locking mechanism may also be provided. The reeds D3 being the operative set to release matrices from the upper operative magazine A<SP>1</SP>, and D<SP>4</SP> being the operative set to release matrices from the lower operative magazine A<SP>2</SP>, are slidably supported in an adjustable frame J through slots in lower L-shaped plates J<SP>1</SP>, J<SP>2</SP> and similar upper plates. The frame J is hinged at its upper end in supports attached to the side plates of the machine in such a way that the entire frame can be swung to bring the lower ends of either set of reeds D<SP>3</SP>, D<SP>4</SP> into alignment with a single set of actuators E<SP>1</SP> operated from the keyboard E while maintaining the upper ends of the reeds of both sets in engaging relation to the overlying lever D. The shifting of the reed frame is accomplished by the hand lever F through linkage F<SP>1</SP>, F<SP>2</SP> , F4, F3, J<SP>7</SP>, J<SP>10</SP>, J<SP>9</SP> and J<SP>12</SP> . A counter balancing weight C<SP>9</SP> operated through a link C<SP>10</SP> connected to a depending arm on the crank arm C<SP>5</SP> is also provided. Each of the magazines is provided with matrix releasing escapements a and actuating devices therefor including the lever D, a corresponding series of actuating slides D<SP>1</SP> carried on the throat section C<SP>2</SP> and a series of small actuating elements D<SP>2</SP> mounted in throat section C<SP>1</SP> and operable by the slide D<SP>1</SP>.
