Convention date, Aug. 7, 1929. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Acts]. [Class 5 (i).] Trays 26 are used for transferring tobacco from a slicing machine 10 to the closed chamber 30, 40 within which it is shredded and conditioned before reaching the rod-forming channel 36. The tobacco in the hopper 10 is urged forward by a belt 11 and rollers 13, and cut off by a knife 16 ; the back of the tray is obtuse-angled causing the slices to arrange themselves as shown. The tray support 20 also carries a belt 23 which receives slices during the tray-charging operation, the fresh tray scooping up such slices as fall on the belt. The tray may also have a removable base section, whereby the belt 23 feeds the slices into position, the base section being only inserted during transit to the lead-in belt 61 of the feeding and conditioning mechanism. This consists of chambers 70, 30. In the compartment 70 the slices are carded by the rollers 65, 67, 68, 69 and dried by air which enters and leaves by pipes 72, 74. Agitating and further carding take place in the second compartment 30 together with remoistening and flavouring, effected by means of pipes 32, 34.
