Abstract

365,838. Light-sensitive cells. ARCTURUS RADIO TUBE CO., 720, Freyling- huysen Avenue, New Jersey, U.S.A. Feb. 20, 1931, No. 5458. Convention date, March 25, 1930. [Class 40 (iii).] A lightsensitive cell construction comprises a casing containing an electrolyte in contact with two electrodes, one of which is sensitive to light and is mounted adjacent and facing a transparent window formed in the casing. An electrolyte, such as a solution of cobalt chloride and glacial acetic acid, is contained in a shallow casing 10 closed by a transparent window 25 mounted between washers 26, 28 and secured to the casing by a screwed ring 16. The light-sensitive electrode 34, which may have an etched surface of cuprous oxide, has an extension 42 on which is threaded a terminal 30 and is mounted on an insulating plug 40 with an extension 41 fitting into a hole in the casing. The second terminal member 50 is attached directly to the casing forming the second electrode by a screw 56. The height of the ring 16 is arranged so that the lightsensitive electrode is shielded from light when the cell is placed in an inverted position. The back of the electrode member 34 and the insulated spacing block 40 may be coated with insulating paint.
