<PICT:0365247/III/1> To determine the moisture content of flour or other finely-ground or liquid material a charge of finely-ground calcium carbide is placed in a lidless container j suspended from the underside of the perforated false bottom c of a lid b fitting tightly on a circular metal container a, and provided with perforations adapted to be closed by a spring clip h. The space between the false bottom and the top of the lid is filled with coarsely-powdered calcium carbide and glass wool, slag wool, or similar material. After weighing the complete device the flour or other sample is placed in the larger container and the device weighed again. The carbide in the small container is emptied into the flour, the cover replaced, and the apparatus shaken. After the evolution of gas has ceased and the apparatus has cooled the device is weighed again; the percentage of moisture in the flour is calculated from the weight of acetylene evolved, a constant for a given type of flour being added to compensate for the non-reacting moisture of that flour.
