Abstract

Eggs in the shell are sterilized and preserved by treatment, e.g. for 1-10 minutes, with short electric waves, e.g. of up to 100 metres in wave-length, and then sealing the pores of the shell. The irradiation may be with waves of different wave-lengths, e.g. 1-50 metres, obtained by varying the elements which regulate the wave-length in the generating apparatus. Heat, oxygen and ozone are excluded from the eggs during the treatment by interposing screens such as of quartz or "Uviol" glass or a vessel thereof containing cold water. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also the treatment of the eggs with ultra-violet, violet, blue, and other bactericidal rays instead of the short electric waves. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.ALSO:Eggs in the shell are sterilized and preserved by treatment with short electric waves, e.g. of up to 100 metres in wave-length, and then sealing the pores of the shell. The irradiation may be with waves of different wave-lengths, e.g. 1-50 metres, obtained by varying the elements which regulate the wave-lengths in the generating apparatus. Heat, oxygen, and ozone are excluded from the eggs during the treatment by interposing screens such as of quartz or "Uriol" glass or a vessel thereof containing cold water, preferably running. The eggs are cleaned in water, dried, irradiated, e.g. for 1-10 minutes, slightly exhausted under vacuum and then placed in a waxy fluid mixture, e.g. of paraffin or ceresin and stearine, at not over 50-52 DEG C., the mixture being forced into the pores of the shell by subjecting the eggs alternately to vacuum and atmospheric pressure. The eggs are then taken out and the mixture adhering to them is removed, after which they are dried. A final coating of shellac &c. may be applied. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also the treatment of the eggs with ultra-violet, violet, blue, and other bactericidal rays instead of the short electric waves. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
