Abstract
363,885. Lasts. MILLWARD, S. H., The Boot Stores, Mansfield Road, Blidworth, Nottinghamshire. Feb. 12, 1931, No. 4349. [Class 17 (i).] Relates to lasts of the kind wherein a sole portion and a heel portion are carried by two members relatively displaceable to adjust the length of the last and mounted to swivel about a base. A locking device mounted in the base is constructed to occupy three positions, one locking the last to the base and against swivelling, one locking the last to the base but allowing swivelling, and one permitting removal of the last from the base. The forepart post 2 s secured to a disc 1 having a central boss 32 rotatable in a base 28. The heel post 3 is slidable in a guide towards and from the post 2 and carries a spindle 11 the head of which co-operates with a lever 8 for urging the posts apart, a spring 12 urging them together. A spring- pressed pawl 17, releasable by a handle 16, engages teeth 18 to maintain the posts at adjusted distance apart. The boss 32 has an annular groove 33 and four diametrically opposite recesses 34 therein, these parts co-operating with a locking pin 36 having a handle 39 co-operating with a cam or stepped member 40. Normally, the pin engages one of the holes 34. By partial rotation of the handle, the pin is made to engage only the groove 33, allowing rotation of the last but not removal. Further rotation of the handle allows removal. The sole and heel portions 4, 5 are detachable, being fitted on dowel pins and positioned by complementary-shaped abutting surfaces 25, 26. Shields 7 prevent ingress of dirt between the fore and heel posts. A strap 41 for holding the shoe in position is adjustable in tension by the provision of elastic links 42, the number of which can be varied. According to the Provisional Specification, the sole portion 4 may be mounted by means of two pins, one integral with the portion 4 and the other integral with the post, each pin engaging a hole in the other portion.
