Abstract
362,615. Tufting-machines. FAIRWEATHER, W., 65, Chancery Lane, London.- (Singer Manufacturing Co. ; Elizabeth, New Jersey, U.S.A.) Nov. 7, 1930, No. 33490. [Class 112.] The looper of a hook-needle tufting-machine rotates twice for each needle reciprocation ; once to place the thread in the needle barb and a second time to create a slack in the thread by winding it around a retaining device. The thread loops are cut by a disc knife 101 which is rotatably mounted on the feeding foot. As the knife wears the thread forces it round against a friction washer to a new position. The needle is flattened on one side and makes sliding engagement with the knife. The retaining device, Fig. 14, comprises an arm 85 pivoted at 90 to an adjusting arm 91, and actuated by an eccentric 95. The looper 54 whips a length of thread about a nub 86 sufficient for the formation of a succeeding loop. To ensure that the length of thread is stripped from the nub, the vibrating arm 85 enters a recess in the throat plate. Specification 362,616 is referred to. Needles, vibrating laterally; feed by needles; feed by devices engaging the upper surface of the work.- The needle-bar 9 is journalled for reciprocation in a vibrating frame 12 which also carries the feed bar 26. The frame 12 is oscillated about a pivot 13 by a rockshaft 21 which is operated from the main shaft by an eccentric 23. The work is fed by the needle and a foot 24 which engages the upper surface of the work and is carried by the reciprocating feed bar 26. The feed foot, Fig. 9, is serrated on its lower surface and is slotted at 107 to clear the needle and at 108 to clear the thread. The presser foot 46 and feeding foot 24 are operated to engage the work alternately by a lever 53 against the action of a spring 47. Work guides.-A guide 111 pivoted the machine head 4 prevents the pile threads of a previously formed row passing under the feeding foot. The guide is curved to recede gradually from the line of the loops and from the normal to the work support.
