[Class 27.] Articles stored in piles; coin action, mechanicalconnection and multiple-coin.-In a coin-freed vending machine the articles are supported on a plate 6 which is moved along guides 2, 3 by a member 16 connected to a rod 13 having a thumb-piece 14. Pivoted on the member 16 are double-armed levers 5, 17 having arms 5 normally engaging recesses 4 in the guides 2, 3. After inserting the requisite number of coins in a pocket 10 and actuating the thumb-piece 14, stops 18 on the arms 17 engage the coins which transmit the thrust to the plate 6 and rotate the levers 5, 17, so as to move the ends of the arms 5 from the recesses 4. On continued movement of the member 16 the arms engage with cams 34 on the guides and are rotated so as to release the coins, the plate 6 then being moved by the arms 5 engaging stops 21, 22 thereon. The stops 18 are adjustable so as to vary the number of coins required. A rack 23, Fig. 3, secured to the plate 6 co-operates with a pivoted pawl 26 to ensure a complete forward and backward movement of the plate. A Spring-controlled lever 36, normally engaging the front of the rack 23, ensures a rapid closure of the plate 6 when this is in a partially closed position. Returning coin.-During the initial opening movement the bevelled edge 29, Fig. 1, of a cam 28 on the member 16 engages an arm 30 of a lever 30, 31, pivoted at 32 on a bracket 33, so as to actuate the movable wall of the coin shoot and reject any faulty coins &c. lodged therein.
