Abstract
361,908. Extracting screwed bushes. GREENFIELD TAP & DIE CORPORATION, Greenfield, Massachusetts, U.S.A. June 27, 1930, No. 19602. Convention date, Dec. 28, 1929. [Class 83 (iii).] A device for extracting b ro k e n screwed studs &c. comprises a shank 12 having a tapered end 14 provided with longitudinal flutes 18 and a screw thread 16 of opposite hand to the thread of the stud 11 to be extracted. The threads 16, which preferably have a section with a vertical angle of 20‹ as shown, are separated by blank tapered surfaces 20 of a width equal to half or more of the pitch of the thread and the flutes are preferably cut so that their bases lie substantially in the blank surfaces 20. In use the device is inserted in a hole 15 drilled in the broken stud 11 and on rotation to extract the stud the end 14 screws into the hole and causes the blank surfaces 20 to bind tightly against its sides. The sectional height of the threads 16 is a minor fraction of the lead.
