361,630. Optical sound-recording and sound-reproducing apparatus. RIENKS, W., 85, Schoonderloostraat, Rotterdam, Holland. Nov. 28, 1930, No. 35856. Convention date, Nov. 29, 1929. [Class 40 (ii).] In a sound-recording or reproducing apparatus, a sound film 1, Fig. 2, is driven over a smooth drum 2, where the fi1m is exposed, by means of a single sprocket 12 coaxial with the drum. The film is guided on to the drum by a piece of felt or a felt roller 3, Fig. 1, and off the drum by another roller 5, after which the film forms a loop before being engaged by a sprocket 6 which takes up the pull of a winding drum provided with a mouthpiece 7. The roller 2 has a smooth shoulder 10, Fig. 2, over which rides one side of the film with its perforations and sound record, while the perforations on the other side are engaged by the sprocket 12 driven through a spring 14 by a wheel 15, which is loose on the spindle 13 of the sprocket 12 and may act as a flywheel. The spindle 13 is coupled by gearing 16, 17 to a speed regulator 18 co-operating with an adjustable brake lever 19; or the regulator may be mounted directly on the spindle 13. The shoulder 10 of the drum has an opening 4 through which the film is exposed. The light source is outside the drum and the light cell inside the drum, or vice versa.
