Abstract

Pastes for printing cloth are made by converting thioindigoid dyestuffs corresponding to the general formula:-- <PICT:0361350/IV/1> wherein X represents alkyl or hydrogen and R stands for an aromatic nucleus, especially a benzene nucleus, which may be substituted, into their leuco compounds and making these into aqueous pastes with ferrous sulphate or other salts of iron, or an iron oxide or hydroxide. Glycerol, glycol, dihydroxydiethyl sulphide, dihydroxydiethylene oxide or other water-soluble alcohol may be added to the paste. Mixtures with other vat dyes in small proportion may be used. According to examples the leuco compound of 6 : 6<1> dichloro-4 : 4<1>-dimethylthioindigo, obtainable according to Specification 334,878, [Class 2 (iii), Dyes &c.], is made up into pastes with ferrous sulphate with and without glycerol, alone or mixed with 6 : 6<1> diethoxythioindigo. The leuco compounds of 6 : 6<1> dichlorothioindigo and 6 : 6<1> dichloro-4<1>-methylthioindigo obtainable according to Specification 318,595, [Class 2 (iii), Dyes &c.], are also specified.
