Abstract
Triarylmethane dyes capable of being chromed are made by condensing a benzoylbenzoic acid, obtainable by condensing 1 mol. of a hydroxytrimellitic acid or the anhydride thereof with 1 mol. of an N-substituted m-aminophenol, with an aromatic m-dihydroxy compound containing, in a position ortho to one hydroxyl group and para to the other, a hydrogen atom or a sulpho group, or with a monoalkylether thereof, with the exception of resorcylic acid. The products may be halogenated. In examples: (a) 41-diethylamino - 21 - hydroxy - 1 - benzoyl - o - hydroxy-carboxy-2-benzoic acid (obtainable by condensing m-diethylaminophenol and 5-hydroxytrimellitic anhydride) is dissolved in sulphuric acid and condensed with (1) pyrogallol, (b) 2-nitroresorcinol, (c) potassium resorcinol-4 : 6-disulphonate, or (d) resorcinol, (2) the corresponding dimethyl compound is condensed with pyrogallol or 4-chlorresorcinol; (3) the corresponding o-xylidino compound (made by condensing 3 - hydroxy - 21 : 31 - dimethyldiphenylamine with 5-hydroxytrimellitic anhydride) is condensed with pyrogallol, and (4) the product of example 1(d) is brominated in alcohol. The products dye animal fibres in an acid bath yellowish and bluish red and brown tints, which when after-chromed have good properties of fastness. They may also be used for chrome printing on cotton or artificial silk.
