Abstract
360,940. Optical sound-recording and sound-reproducing apparatus. KONEMANN, H., 4, Gereonstrasse, Munster, Westphalia, Germany. Aug. 6, 1930, No. 23549. [Class 40 (iil.] Sound is recorded on a film by using two light sources, the intensity of which is modulated in accordance with the sound, in such a manner as to produce side by side on the film two records which are 180‹ out of phase. Reproduction is effected from these records by causing them simultaneously to influence a light beam acting on two photo-electric cells, these being preferably used in conjunction with a push-pull amplifier to operate a loud-speaker. It is stated that with this arrangement, errors produced by fogging of the film or curvature of the photographic characteristic curve may be avoided, and a weaker average exposure may be given to the film. The recording apparatus shown in Fig. 1 comprises two lamps L<1>, L<2> supplied with direct current from the mains through choke coils D<1> D<2>. Microphone currents are superposed through a transformer T on the currents in the lamps, the connections being such that as the current in one lamp is increased that in the other is decreased. By means of a suitable optical system C, S, O, two sound records which have a phase displacement of 180‹ are thus produced at a, b on a photographic film F. Fig. 3 shows an apparatus for reproducing sound from such records. Light is transmitted from a lamp L<3> through both records a, b on the film F simultaneously, and the two modulated beams thus produced are reflected on to photo-electric cells Z<1>, Z<2> respectively. These cells are connected symmetrically in known manner with a system of valves R<1>.. R<4>, so that the amplified currents are combined in an output transformer and operate a loud-speaker L. As an alternative, the currents of the two cells could be combined by means of a transformer and transmitted to an ordinary amplifier. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 329,405 and 332,197, [both in Class 40 (ii), Phonographs &c.].
