Abstract

In the production of zinc oxide by combustion of vaporized zinc, each retort or crucible for evaporating the zinc is connected to a separate combustion chamber and depositing device, and the latter comprises two or more parts provided with means for putting any part out of operation if desired. As shown in the Figure, zinc vaporized in a retort 3 is oxidized in a combustion chamber 4 by air supplied by a blower 6 from the furnace flue 2, whereby the heat of the waste gases from the furnace 1 is utilized. The zinc oxide is drawn by an exhauster 9 through cooling chambers 7, 8 to bag filters 11. At the beginning of the operation when the zinc oxide is contaminated with cadmium oxide, it is collected in the group of filters A, the pure zinc oxide later obtained being collected in the filters B. Alternatively by removing the im <PICT:0360746/III/1> pure oxide from the filters A, all the filters may be used for collecting the pure oxide. The oxide obtained towards the end of the operation may also be collected separately.
