Abstract
359,801. Glass manufacture. FOURLINNIE, A., 135, Rue Daubresse Mauviez, Mons-en-Baroeul, Nord, France. Dec. 19, 1930, No. 38306. Convention date, Jan. 2. [Class 56.] Purification of metal.-A method of refining glass, or other vitreous material, consists in raising it to a temperature which is lower than the usual refining temperature, and then submitting it to the action of centrifugal force in order to expel the enclosed gas bubbles. A device for carrying out the process comprises a conical metal vessel a which is supported on rollers c within a casing d fitted with a cover j. The vessel a has a central chamber e with an axial opening el, and ducts f lead from the chamber to a central duct f and thence to a discharge pipe g. The vessel is heated by hot gases which enter the cover j through an opening i and pass through passages h in the vessel a to an opening k in the casing. In use, the vessel a is rotated about its vertical axis by driving one of the rollers c, and the glass, which has been melted in a furnace of the usual type, is poured into the vessel through an opening l in the cover j. While the glass is in the chamber e, centrifugal force causes the enclosed gas bubbles to escape and the refined glass passes continuously through the ducts f<1>,f<1>, g into a receptacle from which it is worked out as desired.
