[Class 40 (ii).] In a known method of converting light variations into electrical variations, a source of light a, Fig. 1, illuminates a slit in a shutter b which is focused on a film f and illuminates the cell g. According to the invention, the use of the shutter b is avoided by employing a light-sensitive cell which is sensitive only at a point. The film f, Fig. 2, is illuminated by a source a and an image is projected into the plane of the cell d, so that as the film is moved the cell receives each portion of the film in turn. The cell d consists of a metal point resting on a crystal. The method is applicable to television, the conversion of optical sound records into sound, and the measurement of radiation energy.
