[Class 38 (v).] A " drion" structure comprises a series of pairs of plates 4 of magnetic material covered by, or moulded between, layers 5 of asbestos or other refractory insulating-material in the manner used in connection with transformer core lamination. Each plate 4 is assembled with a co-operating filling plate 6 shaped so as to provide a V-notch 7 and narrow channel 8, the channels in adjacent pairs being oppositely-directed so that, as the arc, after rising to the apex of the V-notch 7, enters the channels 8, it is made to describe a continuouslylengthening zig-zag path. Insulating endplates 11, 12 are provided. The magnetic plates are arranged to engage the cheeks of a blow-out magnet, when such is employed, Fig. 5 (not shown). In another form, Fig. 6 (not shown), plates 4, with or without plates 6, are interleaved with insulating plates each having a notch and a saw-cut extending therefrom, the saw-cuts in adjacent insulating plates being oppositely-directed and the slant edge of each plate 4 being aligned, with that of an adjacent insulating plate. To prevent the are horns 41 from burning, Fig. 7, their ends are apertured at 45 and slotted at 46 so that the arc terminals, on arriving at the slots 46, will not cross same but move as shown by the dotted arrows. Magnetic backing plates 47, separated from the horns 41 by insulating protective plates, are correspondingly apertured and slotted, and also recessed at 48, the edges of the plates 47 being bent round, or extended beyond, the arc horns.
