Abstract
Artificial wool is prepared from vegetable fibre, particularly jute, by cleaning the fibres and removing the substance which imparts stiffness, and then treating with substances which will cause the fibres to curl when subsequently dried; the two treatments may be combined in the same bath. The fibres, after cleaning, are treated in a bath containing chiefly caustic soda, together with sodium bisulphite, powdered colophony and zinc chloride. This removes gummy and mineral substances. The fibres are then centrifuged, washed, neutralized with hydrochloric acid, and finally dried. Bleaching agents such as chlorine or ammonium persulphate may be added to the first bath.
