Abstract

356,492. Writing-machines. PEIN, H., 8, Kohlh÷kerstrasse, Bremen, Germany. Sept. 15, 1930, No. 27560. [Class 146 (iii).] An automatic writing device comprises a travelling flexible steel strip 1 having undulating edges against which bear rollers 2, 3 mounted on pivoted levers 4, 9. The spring-pressed lever 9 is fixed to a spindle 12 carrying a tubular vector arm 13, and the lever 4 is connected by a cord 7 passing round pulleys 20 in the spindle 12 to a spring extruded rod 14 reciprocatable in the arm 13. The writing instrument 18 is held either vertically or inclined, its lower end passing through an eye in the rod 14, and the upper end lying in a ring at the extremity of a fixed member 32. The curves on the edges of the strip 1 are so shaped that the angular oscillation of the arm 13 together with the in and out movement of the rod 14 produces the required script. The curves on the strip 1 are determined by developing the ordinates and abscissµ of the script and flattening the curves, the abscissµ curve being given a backwardation to compensate it for the continuous movement of the band 27 on which the writing is done. Fig. 13 shows a pen 18 surrounded by a hollow model of a hand which shares in its oscillating movements, the curves on the strip being rectified to conform to the angular disposition of the pen. The strip 1 may be prevented from lateral movement by perforating it longitudinally and engaging the perforations with the teeth 38 of a laterally fixed rotary disc 39, Fig. 14 a, a grooved roller 43 bearing on the opposite side of the strip to press it up against the disc 39. The pen 18 may be raised from the paper 27 at intervals by lines of perforations in the strip 1 which allow a toothed disc and its supporting spring-pressed lever to rise and lift with it the spindle 12 and the pen. The strip 1 may be built up by inserting short strip lengths in lateral slots in the links of a chain perforated down its middle to engage the disc 39. The strip 1 may be wound on and off two reels, or may be endless and lie in folds between the reels. The writing band 27 is guided between grooves 28, 29 and is geared to the strip 1.
