Abstract

356,355. Mercury - vapour lamps. STEINMANN, A., Allersdorf, near K÷nigsee, Germany. June 30, 1930, No. 19832. Convention date, July 1, 1929. [Class 39 (i).] A mercury vapour lamp for alternating current use comprises an illuminating tube 5, Figs. 1 and 2, connected by short tubes 3, 4 to a transverse anode element 1 formed by a single cylindrical tube provided with a quartz cutter or dividing-member constituted by the front edge of a wall or partition 2 at the connecting point of the tubes 3, 4 and their transition point in the illuminating tube 5, the dividing-member extending to the bottom of the tube 5 so that it divides the mercury flowing to the anodes. The tubes 3, 4 are arranged at an angle to the tube 5 and at their junction therewith are formed with narrow bends or kinks to enable the mercury column to be broken at that point when the lamp is tilted to effect ignition. The cathode pole vessel is so shaped that, after tilting, a free space remains above the mercury filling to provide a condensing chamber for mercury vapour which passes over to it.
