[Class 135.] Valves controlled by pilot or relay valves.-Audible or visual signals on a train are initiated by a track contact which causes an air impulse to be given to open the signal operating means to the train vacuum source and this last then maintains the signal in operation indefinitely. The apparatus shown comprises a diaphragm c formed with small ports m so that normally a vacuum exists on both sides due to the connection with the train pipe j. At a track contact a spring or like valve (not shown), is momentarily opened to admit air by the pipe n to the underside of the diaphragm c which rises and by its spindle q opens a valve h to connect a siren i with the vacuum pipe j. The diaphragm spindle by means of a lever s also lifts a valve e to maintain the underside of the diaphragm at atmospheric pressure so that the signal persists until this valve e is manually closed, whereupon the vacuum beneath the diaphragm is gradually restored through the ports m. The diaphragm ports m are closed by engaging a valve seating p when the diaphragm rises.
