Abstract
444,903. Train-control systems. HUDD, A. E., Villa Blanche, Balcombe Road, Pound Hill, Crawley, Sussex. Sept. 29, 1934, No. 27924. [Class 105] [See also Groups XXIX and XXXIV] A train-control system comprises two spaced track magnets one of which can be rendered inoperative and a train-carried magnetic receiver the armature of which is connected to a valve in the brake pipe line by a transmission such that the valve is opened by a first magnetic action and is closed if a second magnetic action arises. The traincarried receiver comprises flux collecting plates 36 which are provided with polepieces 35 to attract an armature 37 carried by a diaphragm 34. The movement of this diaphragm, when a track magnet is passed, sets up a pressure which is transmitted through a conduit 18 and deflects a second diaphragm 15 acting on the stem 19 of the brake-pipe venting valve 10. The stem is carried in a bearing 22 on the diaphragm 15 and is provided with two collars 23, 24 having inclined teeth 25, 26 co-operating with inclined teeth on a fixed sleeve 20 through which the stem passes. When the diaphragm 15 is deflected the stem moves to the left and, when the teeth 45, 26 at the right-hand engage, the stem 19 is rotated through an angle so that on the return of the diaphragm the tooth 25 of the left-hand collar 23 engages a shallow tooth 46 on the sleeve 20 and thus the valve 10 is maintained open so applying the brakes and sounding a whistle 12. A second deflection of the diaphragm will slide and rotate the stem 19 in a similar manner thereby bringing the tooth 25 of the left-hand collar 23 into engagement with a deep tooth 47 on the sleeve 20 and so will allow the valve to close. The second deflection of the diaphragm is effected by a second track magnet if the signal is at clear but if the signal is at danger the driver can cancel the braking and the whistle signal by a push which butts on the valve 30 to admit atmospheric pressure to the diaphragm 15. The lower face of the diaphragm 34 becomes exposed to atmospheric pressure by the opening of a port 39 when the diaphragm moves upwardly.
