Abstract

709,836. Actuating signals on trains. WESTINGHOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO., Ltd., and TILLOTSON, P. Nov. 7, 1952 [Nov. 29, 1951], No. 28008/51. Class 105 In cab signalling apparatus of the kind in which the aspect of a distant signal is indicated by means including two magnets placed one ahead of the other on the track and actuating a polarized relay on the locomotive, in order to prevent the driver unwittingly passing a home signal at "stop" on the same post since the track apparatus will have given merely a cautionary "distant signal on" indication and perhaps caused the driver to relax his attention to look for the home signal, both the track magnets are provided as electromagnets, the one first encountered by the locomotive being energized only when the home signal is at "clear." Preferably, means are provided for indicating at the signal box that the clearing of the home signal results in the energization of the first encountered electromagnet. As shown, the energizing circuit of the electromagnet 3 first encountered by a train contains a contact unit 6 of the home signal 9 and the energizing winding of a relay 4 or other indicating device. The energizing circuit of the second electromagnet 2 contains a contact unit 7 of the distant signal 8 and is closed when this signal is at clear. The electromagnets 2 and 3 are oppositely polarized.
