[Class 83 (iii).] A milling machine having a single standard b carrying the work-table c and fitted with an overhanging arm h is provided with bracing means consisting of one or two arms i, i<1> which are slidable in shoes k pivoted to the end of the arm h so that when the braces are not required they may be swung so that they rest on rollers p in a position parallel to and adjacent the arm h. The sliding movement in the shoes is produced by rotating pinions m engaging racks on the underside of the braces. In the operative position the braces are secured by means of clamping plates q, ql and bolts r, r<1>, the plates being slotted so that either or both the braces may be used as required. In Figs. 1 and 2 the milling-spindle is supported in bearings g, g<1> suspended from the overhanging arm. In a modification, three clamping plates are employed, the braces being secured to the machine base a as well as to the table and arm. In a further modification, Fig. 6, the table support c<1> is fixed and the milling head d is adjustable on the standard b. A single brace i of substantially H form is employed and is secured in operative position by means of clamping plates q, q<1>. The spindle carriers g g<1> may be withdrawn between the upper limbs of the H, without disturbing the brace. In a further modification, Fig. 7, the braces are arranged to cross each other, the lower ends being slotted and secured by bolts t.
