Abstract

In the manufacture of fertilizers and purification of gas by passing the latter into ammoniacal liquor containing ferrous sulphate and potassium carbonate or sulphate and precipitating sulphides by addition of further ferrous sulphate, the resulting liquor is electrolyzed in the anode compartment of a bath to yield a fertilizer. The latter contains nitrogen, potassium, phosphorus, free oxygen due to the presence of per-compounds which may be formed during electrolysis or added separately, and synthetic humic acid. The ferrous sulphate may be replaced by sulphates of nickel, calcium, or manganese, or by naturally-occurring humates contained in peat, lignite, &c. The diaphragm of the electrolytic bath comprises natural raw phosphate deposited on the cathode, and may be introduced in a powdered form, mixed with slag, sawdust, or finely-chopped straw, with the potassium salt into the bath containing the ammoniacal liquor.
