Abstract
205,955. Plauson's (Parent Co.), Ltd., (Plauson, H.). Sept. 13, 1922. Non-metallic substances, obtaining. - Alkali carbonates, sulphites, and the like, are obtained by electrolyzing a solution of an alkali sulphate, and allowing the acid produced to react with an insoluble carbonate, sulphite, &c. for instance of calcium, barium, or lead, situated below the cathode, so that the carbonic acid &c. produced combines with the alkali generated by the electrolysis. In one method, the anode, of carbon, coke, graphite, &c. is placed at the bottom of the cell and covered with lumps of the insoluble carbonate. Above the cathode is a porous iron or other cathode through which the alkali carbonate solution is withdrawn; it usually contains some caustic alkali. Fresh sulphate solution is introduced below or through the anode. Barium carbonate may alternatively be supplied in the form of a suspension in the entering liquid. Calcium sulphate may be dried and burnt.
