Abstract

353,942. Fluid-pressure brakes. MALEY, A. W., 4, Grosvenor Road, and TAUNTON, E. M., 11, Wilton Road, both in Handsworth, Birmingham. April 28, 1930, No. 13033. [Class 103 (i).] Pneumatic wheel and track brakes are applied in different positions of a driver's handle and in an intermediate position, the release position, a quick release device is set in action by which the wheel brake cylinder is connected to exhaust. In one arrangement the release valve is closed by a diaphragm acted on by the pressure-fluid which thereafter flows to the wheel brake cylinder through a restricted aperture in the first position of the handle which can then be moved to a lap position between the wheel brake position and the release position to hold the brake on. When the handle is moved to or past the release position the pressure on the release valve piston falls and a spring and the brake cylinder pressure opens the release valve, thereby directly connecting the brake cylinder to atmosphere. In a modification the release valve 4 is also provided with a valve closing the wheel brake cylinder 5 from the supply pipe 1. The driver's valve comprises admission and exhaust valves 31, 32 respectively for the track brake and admission and exhaust valves 35, 36 for the wheel brake. The cam 38 on the spindle of the brake handle 39 is arranged to lift the valve 36 only partially so that a spigot portion 37 restricts the valve opening to somewhat less than that afforded by the restricted opening 9 to the brake cylinder 5 so that the valve 4 will not be opened to exhaust. The quick-release valve may have a lap position and comprises separate valves operated by a piston 11 and a lever 12. Movement of the driver's handle temporarily to slow exhaust position recloses the admission valve 14 without opening the exhaust valve 13 to obtain a lap position. A quick-release valve is also shown having a stop valve which provides a lap position. The pistons of the release valves may normally be under pressure and application of the brake result from release of the pressure on the piston, for instance in case of accident. The invention may be applied to vacuum brakes. Specification 294,593, [Class 103 (i), Brakes &c.], is referred to.
