Abstract

Fluid-pressure.- In pneumatic pressure and vacuum brakes, a valve is fitted to cut off the connection between the auxiliary reservoir and the brake cylinder when the hand release valve is actuated. As described in connection with a vacuum brake, a lift valve 7 controls the connection between pipes 4, 5, 6, leading respectively to the hand-actuated brake-release valve, the auxiliary reservoir, and the brake cylinder. When the brake is applied, the pressures in the pipes 4, 5, 6 are equal, the pressure in the pipe 4 being equalized through an opening 8 in the valve 7. When the brakes are released by a change of pressure in the train pipe and the pipe 6, the valve remains unmoved. When both cylinder chambers and also the pipe 4 are opened to the atmosphere by the release valve, the valve 7 is thrown from the seat 2 to the seat 3, and cuts off the auxiliary-reservoir connection 5 from the pipes 4, 6. When the release valve is closed. and connection is again established between the brake cylinder and train pipe, and the brakes are released by a reduction of pressure thereinthe valve 7 then falls to its seat 2. In air-pressure brakes the arrangement of the seats 2, 3, 4 reversed.
