Abstract

2 8,2 2 6. Soo. Anon. Westinghouse. Dec. 23, 1905, [date applied for under Patents Act, 1901]. Brakes ; sanding rails.-In a pneumatic-pressure brake system of the Westinghouse type, the driver's valve and its connexions are so arranged that the locomotive brakes can be applied, held on, or released, while the pressure in the train pipe is maintained at the standard release pressure. The main reservoir 1, Fig. 5, is connected to the space above the driver's valve through a reducing-valve 2. The exhaust port of the locomotive triple valve 7 is closed up ; otherwise this valve is as usual. The locomotive brake cylinder 32 is connected to a port 25, Fig. 3, in the driver's valve seat. A port 26 in the valve seat is connected to the train-pipe, a port 18 to exhaust, and ports 27 to the sanding-gear. Connexions 28, 29 are provided for pressure gauges, for indicating the pressures in the train-pipe and in the locomotive brake cylinder, respectively. The valve has a through port 14 with extensions 15, 16, and a cavity 20 with ports 17, 21, the latter having extensions 23, 24. By placing the handle of the valve, the position of which is indicated by the line M in the positions I ... VII, Fig. 3, the following effects are produced ; (1) the locomotive brakes only are applied ; (2) the locomotive brakes are held on ; (3) the locomotive brakes are released ; (4) the port 25 to the locomotive brake cylinder is closed and the brakes are in the ordinary running position ; (5) all the ports are lapped; (6) the brakes are applied throughout the train ; and (7) the sanding-gear also is brought into operation.
