Abstract

Fluid-pressure. - In a fluid-pressure brake system for a train of vehicles the brakes on the tractor are applied by pressure or vacuum and. those on the trailers are applied by springs or other energy storing device and released by fluid pressure or vacuum under the control of a common valve mechanism. A lever or other mechanical means provided for releasing the brakes on a detached trailer and adapted to be locked in the release position is arranged to be unlocked by the fluid-pressure or vacuum to ensure the operation of the brakes when the vehicle is coupled up. A vacuum system in which the vacuum is produced by the suction of the engine of the tractor vehicle is shown. The tractor brake cylinder 20 is connected to the valve chamber 2<1> and the trailer brake cylinder 7 to the valve, chamber 2<11> by the pipe 1<1>. The pipe 1 from the engine suction pipe is connected directly to the chamber 2<1> and through a reservoir 5 provided with a non-return valve 4 to the chamber 2". The chamber 2<1> contains suction and atmosphere valves 23, 26 seated by a spring 27, the stem 25 of the one valve being slidable on that 24 of the other. The chamber 2<11> contains similar valves 28, 31. In the normal position of the pedal 38 the valves 26, 28 are unseated by the engagement of levers 35, 36 with their respective stems, and the valves 23, 31 are seated so that the tractor cylinder 20 is open to atmosphere and the trailer cylinder 7 is exhausted to hold the trailer brakes off against the action of the spring 10. By depression of the pedal the valves 26, 28 are seated and the valves 23, 31 are unseated, thus effecting the application of both sets of brakes. If the trailer breaks away the brakes thereof are applied by the breakage of the pipe 1<1>. The brakes on a detached trailer can be released by a hand lever 13 shown as engaging a pin 14 on the piston rod and locked in the release position by a detent 13<1>. To ensure that the brakes are not locked in the released position when the vehicle is coupled up, the detent 13<1> is connected to the piston of a cylinder 17 communicating with the system whereby the lever is unlocked when the vacuum is established in the pipe P.
