[Classes 78 (i), 78 (iv), and 104 (ii).] Plant for loading material from or adjacent to a railway track on to wagons on the track and for unloading it therefrom comprises an elevator for feeding a hopper on a wagon which discharges into a movable trolley which transfers the material to an adjacent wagon from which it is discharged on to side of the track by an elevating and conveying appliance. An elevator a feeds ballast or other material into a hopper b mounted on a frame d on a wagon c. A motor driven hopper trolley g running on rails e on the wagon is loaded from the hopper b and when full is traversed along the rails to an adjacent wagon z of a train of wagons and unloaded. The loaded wagons z, Fig. 3, are unloaded by a trolley j running on the rails e and carrying an elevator r. As the trolley advances along the wagon the material is raised and discharged on to a transversely arranged conveyer s<1> which discharges the material laterally on to the embankment. The elevator is pivotally mounted at its upper end, its lower end being supported by a rope w<1> passing over a polley w<2> on a bracket w so that the elevator can be raised to permit traversing of the trolley from one wagon to another. In a modification, the trolley is provided with a vertically arranged elevator.
