353,602. Air-break switches. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd., Bush House, Aldwych, London.-(Assignees of Koppitz, C. G. ; of Railway & Industrial Engineering Co., Greensburg, Pennsylvania, U.S.A.) May 28, 1930, No. 16479. Convention date, May 29, 1929. [Class 38 (v).] A high-tension air-break switch has a fixed contact jaw 6, 7 formed with parallel contacting surfaces and a movable contact member 12 carried pivotally at 11 as a pivoted switch arm 10, the movable contact 12 being formed with a contacting head 13 adapted to be forced between the fixed contacting surfaces. The members 10, 12 are joined by a spring 11 and their relative motion is limited by stops 16, 17 so as to form a toggle. During the closure of the switch, which is effected by engaging an operating rod with an apertured lug 14 of the contact member 12 and exerting upward pressure thereon, the movable contact arm is first brought to the dotted position in which the contact head engages the surface of the block 6 which is formed of soft metal. Further movement of the operating brings the parts into the position shown in which the members 10, 12 are moved into alignment and the contact head 13 is wedged firmly between the surface of the block 6 and of the U-shaped member 7, the latter being formed of hard springy metal such as stainless steel or spring steel adapted to exert a considerable pressure on the contact head. The latter is formed of relatively hard metal such as phosphor bronze and its combined rotary and sliding movement provides a cleaning action on the contacts. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the movable contact member may be carried on and operated by a swinging insulator. Specification 237,600, [Class 38 (v), Electric switches &c.], is referred to.
