Abstract

286,268. Welsh, J. T. March 2, 1927. [Convention date]. Switches, quick-action; actuating; contacts.- The movable contact 3 is carried by an arm 14 that is pivoted at 16 to a lever 4 which is pivoted in notches 26 in a bracket 5 comprising stamped plates 24. The lever 4 comprises a pair of stamped plates which are positioned by the pin 16 and a lever 12 forming with the lever 4 a toggle device. The contact arm 14 is connected by a dead-centre spring 11 with arms 48 forming parts of a two-plate lever 43, which is pivoted at one end and carries a roller 9 engaging a cam 7 whereby the switch is operated. The arm 14 is connected by a lead 22 to a block 27 which carries guides 37 for the leads and also serves as a support for the plates 24. When it is desired to open the circuit, the cam 7 is rotated, as by a handle, in a counter-clockwise direction whereby the rollers 9 and lever 43 are lifted and the arms 48 projected between the plates of the lever 4 so as to cause the spring to cross the dead-centre and rapidly open the switch. A similar action takes place in the reverse direction, and a pair of ends 47 impart a hammer action to the lever 4 in case of failure of the spring. The spring also causes a rolling action of contact 3 on its fixed contact.
