Abstract
352,516. Pulverulent-fuel burners. DOCKING, A. and McCLEARY, J., York Mansion, Petty France, Westminster. Feb. 12, 1930, No. 4765. [Class 75 (i).] The outlet A of a pulverulent-fuel burner is fitted with a number of corrugated plates, discs, or strips G<1> alternating with plain plates, discs or strips C, or a corrugated strip and a plain strip wound tightly together to form a coil, so that the fuel mixture issues from the burner in a large number of small streams. The corrugations may be inclined to the path of the fuel so as to promote turbulence. The burner shown comprises a casing B formed at b as a venturi choke, an air box C, and a nozzle D into which fuel and primary air are supplied through a tangential inlet D<1>. The fuel and primary air issue from the nozzle D into the casing B through a shouldered aperture D<2> regulated by a valve head E<2> carried by an adjustable spindle E<1>. Air from the box C enters the casing B, preferably in sufficient quantity to complete the total theoretical volume required for combustion, through inclined apertures F<2> controlled by independently or simultaneously adjustable valves F. The nozzle D and spindle E<1> may be extended beyond the aperture D<2> and the nozzle, spindle, or their extensions may be rifled or formed with helical vanes to impart a whirling movement to the air and fuel. Alternatively, part of the fuel nozzle may be of elliptical configuration. The spindle E<1> may be tubular to allow the insertion of a pilot burner or the admission of gas or oil at starting and the addition of air or fuel during operation. Burners, materials for.-The corrugated and plain strips are preferably formed of a heat-resisting metal such as nickel alloy but may be of other refractory material.
