Abstract

352,286. Aircraft wings. BOULTON & PAUL, Ltd., Riverside Works, and NORTH, J. D., Hill House, Eaton Hill, both in Norwich. Aug. 6, 1930, No. 23487. [Class 4.] An aircraft wing or like component comprising two deep and narrow spars connected by ribs has the front spar braced to a stiff leading edge section to support it against lateral failure. Alternatively the rear spar may be braced by an additional longitudinal member adjacent to it. As shown, the front spar comprising booms A<1>, A<2> and a web A<3> is braced to a leading edge section C by struts D . . D<4> connected to the web A<3> at its neutral axis. The struts are connected to the section C preferably at the points where the ribs B are connected. The rear spar is supported against lateral failure by its connection to the ribs B. In a modified construction, alternate bays between pairs of ribs and the front spar and leading edge are braced by cross wires extending from the intersections of the ribs with the upper boom A<2> to the intersections with the lower edge of the leading edge member and by similar wires extending between corresponding points on the lower boom A<1> and the upper edge of the leading edge member.
