Abstract

399,555. Aircraft structures. VICKERS (AVIATION), Ltd. and WALLIS, B. N., Weybridge Works, Byfleet Road, Weybridge. April 8, 1932, No. 10111. [Class 4.] In aircraft structures comprising spars, ribs connected transversely to the spars and stringers supported by the ribs with the exterior border of each stringer protruding beyond to ribs to a predetermined extent, the stringers are formed with openings in predetermined positions and the rib booms are so constructed as to permit the stringers to be threaded on the booms and adjusted in position along the length thereof. As applied to a wing, Fig. 1, spar booms a carry composite ribs having booms b of constant diameter tubing. Before assembly of the ribs bridge-pieces c, Fig. 2, are threaded on the booms and located. The bridge-pieces c are of the channel section shown in Fig. 5, and are formed with pressed-out necks c<5> by which they are maintained at 90‹ to the axis of the rib boom. The position at which the neck c<5> is formed determines the distance the outer border c<2> of the bridgepiece projects outwardly from the boom. The bridge-pieces c interconnect stringer sections d between adjacent ribs. The stringers are of similar section to the parts c but of reduced size so that the ends may fit closely within the channel ends of the bridge-pieces and be secured therein, as shown in Figs. 2 and 5. According to modifications the bridge-pieces may be simply supports for continuous stringers or the stringers may be made continuous and themselves be provided with the opening and neck for locating them on the rib booms.
