[Class 74 (ii).] Means are provided for engaging a withdrawn splicing yarn with the fabric formed on the needles which do not receive the splicing yarn. The invention is particularly applicable to machines for knitting spliced stockings having contiguous ribbed and plain portions. In rib machines the splicing yarn y, after being fed to the splicing needles, is caused to lie exteriorly to the loops r of the ribbed wales and interiorly of the loops a of the face wales, so that that portion of the yarn y exterding around the inside of the unspliced part, e.g. the stocking instep, is caught in front on the dial loops r<1>, r<2>, &c. The splicing yarn guide F<1> is actuated, as usual, by a lever 460 controlled by the pattern drum, but is provided with a cam 19 upon its under surface, so that when the lever 460 is engaged by a cam 295, rotating with the needle cylinder, the yarn guide F<1> is lifted to an intermediate position for positioning the yarn between the rib and face wale loops. The splicing yarn may be positioned for reception by, or with respect to, the needles by a member 26 pivotally mounted with the guide F<1>, and arranged between the guide and the position at which the needles receive the yarn. Additionally, and as applied to machines having two part dial needles, jacks 30 having bevelled ends 32 may be provided for depressing the splicing yarn beneath the level of the loop drawing instruments d<2> of the dial needles.
