351,025. Ventilating apparatus. CARRIER ENGINEERING CO., Ltd. and GROOM, S. L., 24, Buckingham Gate, London. Jan. 16, 1930, No. 1569. [Class 137.] Ventilating apparatus for an enclosure comprises a heat exchanger supplied with steam, a fan drawing air over the exchanger and means sensitive to the thermal conditions in the enclosure for varying the speed of the fan and consequently the flow of air for controlling the heat transfer. With this arrangement there is no need to throttle or cut-off the steam and condensation in the heater is therefore minimized. A mixture of fresh and return air from inlets B, B1 respectively is drawn over a steam heater C in a casing A and distributed to the enclosure by means of outlet nozzles D preferably adjustable as regards direction. As shown in Fig. 1 a fan E is provided for each outlet, the fans being connected to a common shaft G by thermostatically controlled clutches F by which one or more fans may be shut off at different temperatures. Alternatively the fans may be controlled by varying the speed of the driving motor H. For this purpose the control arm of a variable resistance in series with the field winding of the motor is actuated by a thermostatically controlled compressed air motor. As shown in Fig. 2a the casing is provided with additional inlets B2, B3 for fresh and returned air in such a position as to byepass the heater C. The air inlets may be provided with manually or automatically operated baffles to control the amounts of fresh and returned air. In a modification the casing is adapted to be disposed over existing radiator systems.
