Convention date, May 17, 1929. Addition to 314,895, [Class 80 (iii), Linkwork &c.]. [Class 99 (i).] Two hose &c. pipes 20, 21, Fig. 1, are coupled by end members 22, 23, the flanges 1, 2 of which are pressed together, with the interposition of packing 2a, by a pressure-applying device mounted looselv on the member 22 and formed at its lower end with a U-shaped flange 3b, or projections, to receive the flange 1, or projections on the member 23. The said pressure device is formed of two parts 3, 6 which are mounted on either side of the flange 2 and are screw-threaded together. The parts 3, 6 grip a flat ring 7 which is formed with a series of slots 11, Fig. 3, each accommodating a ball 12 bearing on the flange 2, and a series of balls 10 are disposed on the ring to abut against the part 6. The axial distance l between the balls 10, 12 is normally less than the combined radii thereof, but this distance can be increased to apply pressure between the members 22, 23, when the latter are coupled, by a screw 14 which is disposed in the part 6 and is adapted to force the balls 10 against the balls 12. In a modification, Fig. 6, each pipe section is provided with pressure-producing means actuated by a hooked lever 29, 29a through a cam 27, 27a, and the hooks 30, 30a of said levers are adapted mutually to lock in the clamping position.
